People who want to get on in life set goals, right? New Year’s resolutions are a great example. Google images is full of people punching the air at the top of mountains - because they've made it. If you want to lose weight, exercise more or save more money, we set goals.
The problem is, they largely don’t work. Over 90% of people fail at their New Year’s resolutions. And even when they do work, they only change your life for a moment. That’s the odd thing about improvement. We think we need to focus only on the outcome when what we really need to focus on is the “system” or process that gets us there. In order to really build a better life we need to fix what we do everyday (the system), and not just a one-off achievement (the goal).
When you're working toward a goal, you exist in a near-permanent state of failure - you are essentially saying, “I’m not good enough yet, but I will be when I reach my goal.” This is psychologically wearing.
When you focus on your daily system, you keep things simple and reduce stress. You can enjoy the present moment, feel the benefits of success every time you do any aspect of your system and improve at the same time.
Working with Olly, our confidential, non-judgemental chatbot, and his "system", you will find you succeed daily, with each little win. The good stuff follows as a natural consequence.
Olly won't tell you goals are useless, they are good for pushing yourself and for long-term planning, but committing to, and focusing on, a system is the way to make them happen.
